Most operators report that video is responsible for approximately 70% of their network traffic today, and growing fast. Few argue that it will soon account for 80%, and perhaps more, in the next few years. Basically, four out of every five bits that a network operator delivers will be video in the very near future. And not only does video place its own stringent requirements on the network, but it’s not a single, consistent application. For example, live video has different requirements from VoD, sports from movies, broadcast from social live streaming, UHD from virtual reality and so on. And that’s without taking into account demand and usage curves and unpredictable, viral spikes in video traffic. Operators looking at network evolution without a clear strategy to understand, manage and monetize video are in danger of ignoring the elephant in the room.
