The “optical white box” has been a popular cocktail-party topic for a couple of years but, to date, has not been taken seriously within the industry. Recent developments are changing this discussion dramatically: the Facebook-led Voyager project within TIP (Telecom Infra Project) has progressed to trials; AT&T is leading the OpenROADM MSA; Microsoft is championing open line systems; and several vendors have launched disaggregated product lines. Individually, each may be dismissed, but collectively the trend is becoming clear: disaggregation and open source will very much part of the optical networks commercial future. What’s less clear is exactly how these concepts and technologies will all play out in a segment that consists of photons, analog technologies and largely proprietary designs.
