To support the significantly expanding connectivity needs of the next decade and beyond, Qualcomm believes 5G must be more than higher data rates and the addition of new spectrum. 5G will not just be a new generation, but a new kind of network that will take on a much bigger role than previous generations – expanding the value of mobile networks to connect new industries, enable new services, and empower new user experiences, while also bringing new levels of cost and energy efficiency.
As we did in both 3G and 4G, Qualcomm is leading the world to 5G. We have been investing in 5G research and development for many years – designing a unified, more capable 5G platform. Qualcomm is developing the 5G air interface and network architecture to be scalable and adaptable to an extreme variation of use cases – not only vastly enhancing mobile broadband, but also scaling to connect the massive Internet of Things and enabling new mission critical control services that require ultra-low latency and new levels of reliability and security.
In addition, we are collaborating with industry leaders to drive 5G from standardization to commercialization leveraging decades of experience shaping the evolution of mobile technologies. To validate and showcase our design, Qualcomm Research is delivering advanced 5G end-to-end prototype systems, such as our 5G 28 GHz mmWave prototype system recently demonstrated at MWC 2016. With the 5G 3GPP standardization process now in motion, we are continuing our role as a leading contributor to creating global standards for mobile networks. And last but not least, we are preparing for impactful 5G trials in cooperation with leading mobile operators and industry stakeholders across the world to accelerate 5G commercial network launches in 2020.
