Nekesa WereDirector of Strategy at Afrilabs
As the Director of Strategy at Afrilabs, Nekesa serves as broadly responsible for supporting the executive in development and executing of a strategy that ensures a thriving innovation economy in Africa driven by the power of the AfriLabs community. Afrilabs currently has a network of 225 innovation hubs spread across 47 African countries.
For the last decade, Nekesa has worked at the heart of Africa’s technology and innovation ecosystem. Nekesa was previously the Managing Director of the iHub, Kenya’s leading innovation hub where she led an open innovation culture that was integral in ensuring quick maturity of the Kenyan innovation ecosystem. During her leadership at the iHub over 600 startups received business support services, 100 of those selected for incubation and acceleration programs, these companies raised over USD 40 million in early stage investments and contributed over 40,000 jobs to East Africa’s economy. Prior to iHub Nekesa worked with several grassroot organisations and non-profits to develop their digital strategies and operations.
Nekesa has served on several boards and is currently a Board Member at Creatives Garage, a high impact space dedicated to creating economic value and jobs for creatives in Kenya; Africa Tech and Creatives Group, a network of 300 members from across Africa who are working to ensure that the Africa Continental Free Trade Agreement works for Africans, specifically startups and small to medium businesses; and Missing Child Kenya, a platform to share information about missing children across Kenya with an aim to bring them all home safe.
