Aalia Manie is a partner in the Technology, Media, Telecommunications & Intellectual Property Practice at Webber Wentzel.
Aalia is an intellectual property (IP) and technology law expert, with a particular interest in artificial intelligence. A large part of her practice involves IP structuring, monetising IP assets through commercial deals, and the IP and technology aspects of M&A transactions. She has significant experience in technology research and development, licensing and joint venture arrangements.
Aalia has done extensive industry-wide pro-bono advocacy work on regulatory issues impacting the technology sector and start-up ecosystem in South Africa. Her advocacy work led to Webber Wentzel being awarded the "IP Team of the Year" at the African Legal Awards, 2017.
In 2017, Aalia received the African Legal Awards "Highly Commended" Attorney of the Year (associate) award and was listed as one of the Mail & Guardian's Top 200 Young South Africans. She was also named as a "rising star" and "notable associate" in Managing Intellectual Property's "IP Stars" publication.
Aalia has a B.Bus.Sci degree in finance (with first class honours), an LLB degree from the University of Cape Town, and a certificate in Copyright from Harvard University and the University of Cape Town.
