Ken Okwero

Head of Strategy at Safaricom


Ken Okwero joined Safaricom in the Year 2001 and has held several positions within the Technology Division. His most recent role was Head of Products &Services Department where he led value based and strategic selling for technology based products and services. 

Ken took over as Head of Strategy in September 2015; his key mandate being to lead, facilitate and oversee the process of reviewing company strategy in tandem with the changing contextual environment as well as strategic dialogue on behalf of the company. 

Ken holds a Telecoms mini MBA from Informa Telecom University of South Africa, a BSc in Electrical and Electronic Engineering from University of Nairobi, IMIS higher diploma from Strathmore University and several Strategy and Management certifications from International Institutions. He is currently completing an Advanced Management Program at the Strathmore University. 

Key Achievements:

  • Bringing M-PESA to Kenya and was instrumental in the launch of M-PESA in March2007. M-PESA has since gained over 20 million subscribers countrywide and has become the world leader in mobile money with over 10 awards in its name. In2014, KES 4.2 trillion, equating to a quarter of the country’s GDP and over 6million transactions were made via M-PESA. He has seen successful enhancements of M-PESA platform through various value added services (such as Lipa na M-PESAand M-Shwari). 
  • Ken has seen the delivery of key strategic programs in Safaricom including Converged billing system, a Subscriber Management System and ringback tunes (SKIZA) deployment among many others. He has seen the successful implementation of Value Added Services strategic system planning, product development and deployment.
