Nomonde Gongxeka

Independent Researcher at South African Communications Forum


She holds a Master’s Degree in ICT Policy and Regulation from the University of Witwatersrand. She possesses over twenty-five (25) years’ experience in the broader media sector having worked in the space of content development, production & scheduling, and the broader broadcast media value chain. Most of the programmes that has worked on span across television, radio, print and social media and were mostly supported by outreach programmes. She has had an opportunity to work for media development NGO’s, the SABC, South Africa’s public broadcaster, where she occupied various positions, and also worked for MultiChoice Africa as Head: Africa Regulatory Stakeholder Management.  

In 2015, she wrote a South Africa Chapter titled “South Africa’s Experience with Public Service Media” for the book titled “Public Service Media Initiatives in the Global South”. The book was published in July 2016 by the Simon Fraser University, Vancouver. Recently, she formed part of a research team that undertook the Africa Domain Name System (DNS) Market Study that was commissioned by the Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN). The research study was seeking to explore and identify the strengths and weaknesses in the DNS market and ecosystem in Africa.

In the past, she has served as Board Member of the Media Diversity and Development Agency (MDDA). Within the agency, she chaired the Finance and Operations Committee and also served in the Policy, Legislative & Regulatory Committee. From 2013 - 2015 she was appointed as Chairperson of the South African National Adjudication Committee (NAC) for the SADC Media Awards. She is currently serving as an advisory Board Member at the African Leadership Academy (ALA). She also serves in the ICT Forum’s Disability Chamber under the Department of Telecommunications and Postal Services (DTPS).
