Pierre van der Hoven has been a key innovator in South Africa’s media sector for more than 25 years. After serving as part of the SABC’s post-apartheid transformation programme, in the mid-1990s to secure and operate licences in the liberalised broadcasting sector – among them e-tv (as the first commercial free-to-air television in South Africa), YFM (with Pierre as commercial director, YFM rapidly established itself as the country’s largest regional radio station) and Yarona FM (still firmly established as Botswana’s dominant commercial radio station). He has also been the driver behind media projects ranging from wildlife and documentary video production; digital signage; to television and online marketing (establishing and operating a channel on the UK’s Sky TV platform, and online) to market South Africa.

In 2011 he launched Tuluntulu, pioneering free-to-air mobile video and audio content for the mass African market, growing the business into one into its current position as a leading mobile content platform targeting African and African diaspora audiences. As one of the first platforms to use low data consumption technology (it consumes +-50MB/hour), Tuluntulu has attracted an audience of more than 500 000 to its 40 TV channels, and 30 radio stations – mainly in South Africa, Nigeria, Ghana, Kenya and Tanzania.

He has worked widely as a consultant, has been a member of the RAMS & TAMS Council, has served on the council of the Council of Da Vinci University, and as a director of several private companies.

He is a qualified chartered accountant (CA) SA and chartered marketer CM (SA), and holds an MBA from Henley Business School in the UK. His MBA thesis focused on Africa as a production destination for international films, co-productions, and other forms of video content creation.
