Sello Mmakau is the Group Chief Information Officer for Airports Company South Africa (ACSA). He has extensive experience as an IT executive in both private and public sectors ranging from Strategic Management, Projects and Portfolio Management to Operations Management, Risk Management, Enterprise Architecture, Business Processes re-engineering and implementation of turn-a round strategies. After a successful tenure at Sasol, Sello was headhunted to join the then dysfunctional Home Affairs where he led the successful turnaround IT Modernisation strategy. In his tenure as a CIO, he has won a number of outstanding performance awards including Organisation’s Project of the year, Best Managed Branch of the year, international awards of United Nation award in Service Delivery through use of technology in 2009 and Best designed Smart ID Card in October 2013 High Security Conference held in Bangkok. In 2012, he was voted SA Visionary CIO of the Year by Gartner, GIBS, IITPSA, having mostly digitised business, improved quality services, enhanced business security, improved organizational revenue. He successfully led the strategic collaboration project with the banking industry to develop automated online fingerprint verification integrating Home Affairs systems with SA major banks curbing identity fraud saving banks in millions of rands, and has successfully implemented the new South African smart ID card in 2013 & 2014. In 2016, Sello joined Airports Company South Africa (ACSA) as the company’s first Chief Information Officer (CIO). He was immediately tasked with developing a company’s multibillion Digital Strategy which was approved by ICT Steercom, Audit and Risk Committee (ARC), Bid Investment Committee and subsequently by the Board in 2015. He has implemented a number of customer facing digital projects/ solutions including Passenger Experience (Kiosks, FIDS etc), HR EPM, cloud technologies and BI & Analytics, Finance, SCM, property & Commercial management, mobile Apps (for leaves, contracts, PO’s approvals) etc. According to Oracle September 2017 report, ACSA is now the leading organization in adopting Software as a Service/ cloud technology (SaaS) in the whole public sector oracle customers (leader in all Oracle SOE’s & Government Departments combined). He is current an ACSA member of IT MANCO (Chairperson), ICT Steercom, EXCO, OPSCOM and Audit & Risk Committee (ARC). In 2016, he was been appointed to the Board of JSE listed Afrocentric Group, its ARC and ICT Steercom (chairperson). Sello has presented this Digital Strategy to a number of local and international summits/ conferences including the Aviation Terminal Passenger Conferences in Germany Munich and Cologne in 2015, Aviation Summit in London 2016, National Aviation Conference Discussion in USA in 2017, ICT Public Forum in 2017 to mention a few. Sello is an innovative, passionate, hardworking, visionary and a business acumen leader who strives for excellence in all what he does. A Bcom and MBL graduate, Sello has experience in the petroleum, health, telecoms, transportation and aviation industries. He enjoys soccer, rugby, Tennis and boxing sports.
