“Mobile broadband is the fastest-growing segment in the African telecoms market. We expect this segment to pass the 100 million subscriptions mark in 2013 on the back of more HSPA network rollouts, a constant decline in device prices and further segmentation in data tariffs. HSPA is to remain the dominant mobile broadband technology over the next five years. Very few operators have started planning an LTE strategy as LTE deployment in Africa is mostly pending on issuing of spectrum.”
Thecla Mbongue is a Senior Research Analyst in Ovum’s Middle East and Africa team and has a key focus on mobile operator and vendor strategies in sub-Saharan Africa. As well as being responsible for researching the telecoms industry in sub-Saharan Africa, she also manages World Cellular Data Metrics, in which Informa tracks mobile data take-up, usage, and revenues, including messaging traffic volumes, and user data for mobile broadband and smartphones.
Thecla joined Informa in 2003. A native French speaker, she is a regular speaker and moderator at telecoms events and conferences and is often quoted in the regional and global business press.
