A sister company of Google, Loon is working to deploy a network of stratospheric balloons to provide internet connectivity to unserved and underserved areas around the world. The balloons operate as floating cell towers 20km in the sky. From up there, Loon’s system can transmit LTE signals directly to users on the ground over a much wider area than a traditional ground-based tower. Loon works with mobile network operators to enhance and expand their existing networks. With a mission to connect people everywhere, Loon is getting started in Africa with Telkom Kenya. Service is set to begin in 2019. Come by to meet the Loon team, learn how the technology works, and grab some swag.
