Darius joined the industry five years ago, yet his engineering career started over 20 years ago. He was building houses and planning cities in various video games since he was eight years’ old. Three years ago, Darius got involved with Virtual Reality development and started bringing his engineering projects to this new medium to provide stakeholders with an immersive experience of the planned projects before they were built.
The most recent project was a research on Virtual Reality application for health and safety training in the highways industry, delivered on behalf of Transport Scotland’s Innovation Fund. Darius developed a virtual reality highway worker safety module allowing future trainees to experience how hazardous the highway environment truly is from the first person. Trainees immersed in the Virtual Reality can see a busy highways site, hear the noise that surrounds them and have a freedom of movement and interaction, so they could make mistakes safely.
The Virtual Reality model was used in collaboration with local training providers and combined into their regular classroom training activities to increase the overall effects of the training. Last year this Virtual Reality training module won the Highways Award for Site Safety Initiative. Darius will share the story of how this model came to life.
