The NG-PON2 G.989.2 Physical Media Dependent (PMD) specifications were recently updated with the ITU-T approval of Amendment 2. This update was mainly centered around reducing the costs of the ONU optics by adding flexibility to the specification. We will examine the updates and how they impact optical component costs. We will also examine differences in how to determine compliant optics given the new flexibility. Finally, we will turn attention to the progress made on higher link budget OLT components, which allow the operator to share the OLT over larger numbers of ONUs.
