Be like Facebook? Should Telecom Really Aspire to be a WIC?
Many telcos are looking enviously at the agility with which the WICs (Facebook, Google, Microsoft) build and operate their hyperscale data centers. The WICs have been making many of their designs available in the Open Compute Project, and the telcos have created the Telecom Infrastructure Project in order to leverage that output. Even if they don't take the WICs on head-to-head for public cloud, there is an argument for deploying cloud infrastructure and automation for NFV and other services. This session will discuss what's happening with OCP and TIP, and explore how similar – or different – a telco data center is, and should be, given the different workloads required to deliver their distinct service portfolio.
