Michael currently serves as the lead from the Ministry of ICT – Government of Kenya, designing the proposed SDG Innovation Accelerator lab which is part of the worldwide UNDP Accelerator labs, 60 labs serving 78 countries will work together with national and global partners to find radically new approaches that fit the complexity of current development challenges.
His work is pragmatic – empowering Africa’s Forgotten Bottom Millions. He co-designed and spearheaded the “Barefoot Digital Youth Squad” or “Barefoot Digitali” in local slang in the County of Kisumu, empowering young people (18-32 years). The program provided digital literacy, basic life skills and embedding technological skills in rural communities to increase access to opportunities. It also facilitated access to further training and job opportunities through online study or work programs – empowering young people in sustainable ways to foster rapid system-wide transformations across a wide range of skills. The program focused on Standard 8 leavers deprived of the opportunity to complete secondary school, introducing them to the gig economy in the process.
He is a thought leader on the Future of Work and Fourth Industrial Revolution, leading work around emerging technologies and economic empowerment. Michael serves varying sectors across platforms in interdisciplinary sectors within government, NGOs and the private sector, in Africa and globally.
Michael is a member of the Distributed Ledgers and Artificial Intelligence Taskforce, Kenyan Ministry of ICT, after completing his role as Minister responsible for the docket of Communication, Information and Technology – County Government of Kisumu. He’s a Global Fellow – Social Innovation (Rockefeller Foundation), Skoll Foundation Fellow 2019 and previously served within the wider creative industry sector, contributing to developing The Road Map for Kenya’s creative industries sector, in collaboration with IBM, positioning the sector as a catalyst for Kenya’s economic growth, focussing on how this sector can double Kenya’s contribution to GDP.
