Zhou WangCo-founder & Chief Science Officer at SSIMWAVE
Zhou Wang is one of the world’s most cited (48,000+) authors in visual perception-based image quality assessment, processing and compression. His innovative work created a paradigm change in the imaging field and has been used for video quality assurance throughout the global media delivery industry, directly affecting millions of viewers daily.
Dr. Wang is a Fellow of the IEEE, Canadian Academy of Engineering and the Royal Society of Canada. He received his Ph.D. from the University of Texas at Austin before choosing the University of Waterloo as his research hub. He is the recipient of the 67th PrimeTime Engineering Emmy Award for his groundbreaking work on Structural Similarity (SSIM) video quality algorithm. He was also awarded the 2009 Best Paper Award and the 2017 Sustained Impact Paper Award from the IEEE Signal Processing Society. His work led to the creation of the American Society of Cinematographers technical working group that focuses on HDR evaluation. The working group was aptly named “SSIMWAVE” after the company Dr. Wang co-founded with his Ph.D. student, Dr. Abdul Rehman. Drs. Wang and Rehman are the key researchers behind SSIMPLUS™, a proprietary next generation algorithm built for modern digital video distribution. Dr. Wang also holds the title of Chief Science Officer at SSIMWAVE.
