Global Carrier Billing Summit
September 2024

Ahead of the Global Carrier Billing and Mobile Payments Summit, which takes place in Amsterdam next week, Lisa Bondarenko, the event's content producer analyses current challenges in the digital payments space, and how the conference will address them.

This year’s Global Carrier Billing and Mobile Payments Summit is bringing together the major mobile payments players, under one roof, in the picturesque city of Amsterdam. Join the Informa Tech team, from 19-20 September, to hear from and meet with stakeholders including global mobile network operators (MNOs), payment providers, aggregators, security providers and digital merchants.

For 2023, we will be expanding the summit to delve deeper into the entire digital wallets ecosystem, enabling our delegates to discover “hidden gem” industry news and research within the telco payments space. As the Conference Producer for Global Carrier Billing and Mobile Payments Summit, I am looking forward to welcoming you to an event that will serve as a catalyst for innovation, collaboration, and strategic decision-making.

Together, carrier billing and e-wallets present an attractive alternative to traditional payment methods, such as credit cards. However, the market is still evolving and there are various challenges and opportunities that need to be addressed – including regulatory compliance, fraud prevention, user experience optimisation, market expansion, and synergies with emerging technologies.

The current market tension stems from the increasing demand for seamless and convenient mobile payments solutions in a rapidly digitalising world. Omdia estimates that total carrier-billed revenue will grow 1.5 fold between 2022 and 2027, from US$61.7 billion to US$91.2 billion.

As consumers become more reliant on their mobile devices for various transactions, the industry needs to assess each stage of this digital journey, to keep up with the pace of consumer demand. That is why Global Carrier Billing and Mobile Payments Summit will be taking a comprehensive approach to the market’s current pressures, by examining topics including the purchasing of digital goods, subscriptions, in-app security, mobility as a service, as well as ed-tech platforms.

According to Omdia, direct carrier billing revenue derived from plain payments in app stores, websites and physical-world points of sale will amount to US$46.2 billion in 2027, after growing by nearly 30% from 2022. But the fastest revenue growth – more than twofold – will come from over-the-top subscriptions bundled with or added to telco tariffs. Omdia currently predicts bundling revenue will go from US$20.3 billion in 2022 to US$42.8 billion in 2027.

Considering such a rapid pace of growth, our event will provide a practical assessment of current business challenges, as well as a deep-dive into news ways to overcome existing barriers to telco monetisation within the digital payments space. The summit will also support the establishment of new and meaningful partnerships across the ecosystem, to help the industry resolve some of its current pressures.

By leveraging the insights of Informa Tech's sister-brand Omdia, and the support of leading internal and external analysts, the summit’s programme has been carefully researched and planned to cover a plethora of key topics relevant to the mobile payments ecosystem.

During the new, 2023 iteration of the event, we will work together as an industry to redefine the mobile payments landscape, as we analyse the payments universe, anticipate future industry challenges and opportunities and discover how to unlock the untapped potential in this market. At Informa Tech, we truly understand the challenges and opportunities in this rapidly evolving ecosystem, and it is our aim that by hosting the summit, we can help to empower both operators and mobile payment providers to enhance their offering and foster business growth.

As an MNO, content creator, streaming service, gaming publisher, a digital or physical merchant, success hinges on selecting the right payment methods to maximise business revenue and customer satisfaction. Throughout the summit, we look forward to sharing with you unparalleled insights into the benefits and nuances of different payment methods, equipping you with the knowledge to make informed choices to further your business goals.
