It’s pretty fundamental: You can’t have the Internet of Life-Savings Things without “things” at the edge to perform functions. Our experts will provide an overview of IoT devices from simple sensors that require little power or data throughput to remote-controlled robots that support video-surveillance operations, requiring significant bandwidth with very low latency. From fixed devices to wearables, which “things” offer the greatest promise to save lives, whether they are owned by a public-safety agency or a private citizen?

Life-savings things are great to have, but their sensing capabilities typically are of little or no value, unless the data can be transmitted to someone empowered to take advantage of the IoT insights. If this information is critical to your health and safety, to operate vehicles, or to run your community, the connectivity between the “things” must work, regardless of the environmental conditions. What are the options, and where are investments best spent—hardening a network or establishing redundant paths and alternative solutions that can be deployed quickly when failures occur?

With all these connected devices comes data—lots of it. But raw data is little more than trivia until the data is analyzed and helpful trends are identified. While most agree that this is key to any successful IoT or IoLST initiative, establishing effective and efficient analytical procedures can be challenging. Which analytical tasks can be automated or enhanced by technologies such as artificial intelligence? Where is human input needed, both in terms of establishing policies for automation and prior to making the ultimate actionable decision?

You provide your data every time you use the Internet or smart device, and sometimes when you’re not. From video surveillance to social media, examine the privacy, security and legal implications of this data collection. When can it be used by public safety to solve crimes? Can health data be used to change your coverage? Can it be accessed it be used maliciously by hackers? Examine the ramifications of collecting this data, keeping it secure, and under what conditions can access be granted.

Getting started in IoT is fairly common, but getting beyond the “pilot purgatory” stage has proven to be challenging in both the public and private sector. The panel will examine how best to measure “success” in a manner that will encourage decision makers to support a sustainable initiative, and discuss the governance needed by all parties as they begin to work together to roll out IoLST initiatives.

One potential way to improve return-on-investment (RoI) calculations may be to consider partners. After all, public-safety IoLST, smart communities, utility smart grids and autonomous cars have a lot in common. All promise tremendous benefits to citizens, greatly enhancing citizens’ safety, convenience and quality of life. All work better with robust connectivity—particularly low-latency, high-bandwidth fiber, 4G or 5G—that needs to be extremely reliable to realize full operational benefits. And no one heading these initiatives has unlimited funds to make their visions a reality. Given this, which aspects of these IoT-centric can be shared, generating synergies that can improve both performance and return on investment (RoI)? Can initiatives like rural broadband and next-generation 911 also benefit? Are the benefits worth the extra complications of coordinating multiple groups?
