In the Key Challenge Panel series, the IoT World Keynotes discuss some of the key issues affecting the effective widespread adoption of IoT.

One of the characteristic features of IoT deployments a scale is that they require close interworking of OT (operational technology) with IT. A  key challenge for many organizations will be management of IT/OT convergence projects because of inherent differences how their IT and OT groups see the problem and solution.

Benefits of IT/OT integration include reduced operating costs, shorter development time and common platforms, the extension policy and security across networks, and optimization of business processes.

But challenges include issues such as project ownership, communication between groups and with stakeholders, and adapting or harmonizing conflicting organization needs, process and policy into a single and common structure.

This panel discusses real market experience in bridging the IT/OT divide.

Scale IoT Profits not Costs. Scale Insights not IoT Infrastructure
  • Keith O’Byrne - Head of Solutions, Asavie
more

Amazon are fond of saying ‘Friends don’t let friends build Datacentres’. That this mantra is self-serving doesn’t make it any less true. In IoT terms, projects start out with good intentions but bloat grows quickly – dedicated VPNs, standalone silos…..what seemed like a quick hack to prove a concept quickly becomes tomorrow’s legacy issue. This might be tolerable in isolation – but it’s catastrophic at Asia-scale, where cities are being built Smart-first and infrastructure for over three billion people is being built by US, European and local companies. Join Asavie’s Keith O’Byrne to find out how to scale your IoT projects profitably but avoid falling into the trap of uncontrolled infrastructure expansion. In this session you will learn how to empower your IoT strategy by:

  • Aggregating secure IoT connectivity across multiple mobile network operators
  • How a flexible network architecture is key to maintaining autonomy of your IoT strategy from edge to Cloud
  • Why the public internet is NOT the best place for your IoT project
  • How to achieve a multi-cloud strategy

Get Started With IoT: The Three Guiding Principles
  • Bernd Gross - SVP of IoT & Cloud, Software AG
more

Getting started with IoT can seem like a monumental task for most businesses. Many IoT projects struggle to get off the ground as both IT and Business functions grapple with the far-reaching implications of the IoT on their organization.

Every instinct tells you to do it all - cram it all in. But doing too much too soon results in scope creep – maybe even project failure - and tough questions about ROI will soon follow.

Avoid the obstacles of IoT adoption by following these core principles:

  • Start small, scale fast
  • Failing fast is not failure.
  • Prove value very very quickly

Why Are We Stuck in Pilot Purgatory?
  • Speaker Christian Olivier - President Sigfox USA, Sigfox USA
more

As members of the IoT ecosystem, the value of IoT is obvious to us, and we have a deep understanding on how to implement the technology. However, for end users that are not IoT experts, IoT is complicated. The value may seem evident, but in order for users to scale their IoT solution, they need quantifiable, relevant data. For B2B IoT to reach to the billions of connected objects analysts predict, we, as members of the IoT ecosystem, must all provide more than a solution, we must assume the role of coach to customers and end users at every phase of their journey, so we can together move from pilot purgatory to fully deployed solution providing valuable data.

In this keynote, Christian Olivier, President of Sigfox USA, will talk about the customer journey, opportunities for end user education, helping customers walk before they run, defining project’s value, and the invaluable role of the ecosystem.---

Zen and the Art of Predictive Maintenance
  • Gabe Weiss - Developer Advocate, Google
more

Failing costs a lot. This is true across software, industrial manufacturing, medical care and more. But the question asks itself: How can we make production cheaper and safer by predicting failures before there's even a problem at all? Software development has compilers, unit tests, functional tests and logging/monitoring tools, but how can we guarantee the same levels of safety, especially when everything runs in production? This is particularly important given that failure in industrial or medical manufacturing may mean severe consequences, which can easily include death. We’ve reached a tipping point where computers, and more specifically, microcontrollers, have gotten powerful enough and small enough that they can be integrated into hardware to communicate when hardware shows signs of failure long before it fails. Connect these mini computers to more powerful machines or the Cloud and you’ve got a framework to prevent catastrophic failure. Come to this talk to learn the pieces involved and how to set them all up into a real world predictive maintenance framework.

Case Study: Innovating Public Private Partnership with the San Francisco Fiber Project
  • Speaker Linda Gerull - CIO, Executive Director Technology Department, City and County of San Francisco
more

To close the digital divide, and to provide more choice, competition, and affordable Internet service prices, the City of San Francisco is seeking to develop a citywide network that provides fiber-based Internet service directly to every home and business. This network will be both universal throughout the City - available to everybody in San Francisco, regardless of income  - and open-access, so that any qualified entity who wants to provide service to residents and businesses should be able to do so. Additionally, the City anticipates that a subsidy to provide low-income San Franciscans with free or reduced-cost Internet will be necessary.

To make this highly innovative project a reality, the City has identified multiple ways to meet the stated project goals, including procuring a life-cycle, public-private partnership (P3) contract to design, build, finance, operate and maintain the citywide fiber network. This presentation will examine how the city innovated the structure of the P3 and discusses the implications for the city, its partners and the people of San Francisco.
