With the emerging threats in IoT (which includes smart homes) and increased attack surfaces, end-to-end security is paramount. Along with security, privacy concerns are on the rise. In particular, seamless provisioning of IoT devices in smart homes while protecting consumer privacy is of utmost necessity. In order to address such concerns, we introduce AoT – a new suite of authentication and authorization protocols for the entire IoT device life-cycle. The foundation for any security solution relies on cryptographic primitives with policy enforcement. However, conventional cryptographic algorithms can be resource intensive and beckon the need for lightweight cryptography (symmetric and asymmetric key crypto). Hence, AoT incorporates lightweight and side-channel attack protected cryptography while ensuring seamless interoperability.

The overhaul or modification of aircraft requires a lot of ground handling equipment necessary: Ladders, Ground Power units (GPU), vehicles, safety equipment. In Hamburg, Lufthansa Technik have 1,500 + pieces of this equipment distributed over the entire work area, and often faced the problem of finding the right equipment and understanding its status (booked, out of order, fueled/unfueled}? Highly skilled workers were wasting time searching for equipment. VIP customers couldn’t get out of the plane, because the right ladder couldn’t be found. Missing equipment also meant greater cost due to renting replacement tools from the airport.

Lufthansa Technik has launched a project to fix these pain points: Know both status and location of equipment and be able to act quickly to increase efficiency. This talk will outline both the technical outline of the project, challenges faced and successes so far.  

The foundation of the infrastructure is an IoT network with LoRa WAN and BLE. The stack includes three IT applications and platforms where the production crew can order equipment as easy as a pizza (1), the service employees can see the position like in a taxi app and can provide the equipment (2) and last, but not least, the coordinator can control and adjust the GSE easily within the planning tool which has all the existing data from our ERP system (3).  It’s a system for all kind of devices: mobile phone, tablet or desktop PC. With analytics, we have full transparency and are able to further increase the efficiency.

The system is running in Hamburg and Frankfurt, with proof of concepts in Munich and Malta. A further rollout is planned for other kind of use cases within the aviation like cargo containers, reusable boxes, parts and tooling. Again: Not only to track them but also know for example where and when an asset got a damage in order to clarify how is responsible for the repair cost: The customer or the ground handler.

We'll include details from Claritys current pilot of nodes in several cities around the world. Clarity Nodes measure real-time PM2.5, PM10, gases like O3, total VOCs, NOx, CO2 concentrations, temperature, and relative humidity and upload to the Cloud wirelessly. One pilot site is Mexico City where the Nodes were shown to be comparable to FEMs in providing accurate PM concentration data and tracking hourly temporal trends. Data from hundreds to thousands of such networked Nodes can provide new opportunities in monitoring air quality, tracking pollution sources, estimating personal exposure, and assessing the efficacy of environmental, transportation, and planning policies on air quality and health.
