Mitigating Risk From Natural Disasters Using IIoT Applications
  • Philip Mezey - Chief Executive Officer, Itron

Disasters have caused more than $1.4 trillion in damage and affected 1.7 billion people over the past 10 years, according to the United Nations Office for Disaster Risk Reduction. From storms to floods to fires, the devastation caused by these natural disasters have a serious impact on critical infrastructure. Thanks to advances in technology, communities are responding to natural disasters in ways they never have before. Industrial IoT (IIoT) applications are revolutionizing disaster prediction and response, thereby helping communities increase reliability and safety during disasters and gain insights that were previously unavailable—all while promoting the quality of life, safety and well-being of citizens. Attend this keynote to hear real-world examples of how advanced communities are using IIoT applications to help mitigate risk before these disasters make their landfall, during and after they have passed.

Demystifying Cellular SEPs from Non-SEPs

Standards are an under-recognized driver of global commerce and, while usually associated with the telecommunications sector, are increasingly affecting new verticals as the internet of things (IoT) is realized across consumer and enterprise use cases. Standard-essential patents (SEPs) are patents covering technologies that have been implemented into a technical standard to the degree that an implementer of the technical standard must use the patent. SEP holders, in return for their patent being accepted into a technical standard, volunteer themselves to license the use of their SEP on fair, reasonable, and non-discriminatory (FRAND) terms.

Understanding legal, policy, and business aspects and developments related to IoT standards, SEPs, and the FRAND commitment is important to any organization that creates technology or provides products and services related to technical standards. Around the world, the role of standards and IP in innovation and the IoT specifically continues to evolve. This panel will discuss the interplay of standards, intellectual property, and the future of IoT innovation from the perspective of key IoT innovators.

With 5G starting to roll out, delivering 100 times the bandwidth of prior 4G networks – not to mention many successful pilots of IoT in Cloud environments, it would be very easy to think that data management in Edge IoT environments won’t need to evolve beyond simple memory, flat file, and SQLite data management. To the contrary, along with this increase in bandwidth at the edge, we will also see far more intelligent, locally networked applications and localized analytics that require persistent local and locally shared data. Join this session to learn how, where, and why localized data processing and analytics – including Machine Learning – would accelerate insights that improve device management and governance, IoT security, and business outcomes.

Workshop 3: Discover the new STM32WB, a Multi-Protocol Dual-Core wireless MCU supporting Bluetooth™ Low Energy, Thread and Zigbee from STMicroelectronics
  • Speaker Badreddine Baroudi - MCU Field Applications Engineer, Microcontroller Division, STMicroelectronics, Inc
  • Speaker Vikas Manocha - MCU Field Applications Engineer, Microcontroller Division, STMicroelectronics, Inc

Location: Level 2, 209/210

Looking to add 802.15.4 wireless connectivity, reduce your BOM cost, add functionality and advanced features into your product? The STM32WB dual-core multi-protocol wireless microcontroller is the right fit for you. Learn the basics of Bluetooth and how the STM32WB conforms to Bluetooth Low Energy 5.0. Experience how the STM32WB development tools, ecosystem and examples can take you from a NUCLEO board to a working design in this workshop. Designers new to STM32 microcontrollers are welcome to join and learn how the STM32Cube ecosystem can simplify your next embedded design.

This hands-on training is a working session and requires either a Windows® Laptop (Windows 7, Windows 8, or Windows 10) or a MacBook running Windows (Parallels, VM Fusion, etc.). Participants should have a basic understanding of the “C” programming language or equivalent. Note: Administrator rights are needed for software and driver installation. ST will provide the required P-NUCLEO-WB55 development kit and all software.

SPACE IS LIMITED FOR THIS SESSION – FIRST COME, FIRST SEATED. Must be present, meet eligibility requirements listed below*, and stay for training to receive the free kit.

DEVELOPMENT KIT RESTRICTIONS: Due to Global Trade Compliance Regulations, recipients of the P-NUCLEO-WB55 development pack must be employed by a company with a valid physical address in the United States. PO box is not acceptable. All attendees must verify their eligibility by showing both a business card that includes personal name, company name and company address and a Government-Issued photo ID. If an attendee cannot provide verification, they can participate in the workshop but will need to return the kit to ST at the end of the workshop.

Presentation: BEHIND THE BLADES - The Complexity & Capabilities of the Wind Industry’s Digitalized Future
  • Speaker Reinhard Sander - Vice President, Engineering & Technology, Goldwind Americas

Location: Grand Ballroom C

Electricity markets are transforming world-wide. Innovation and investment are driving high levels of wind energy penetration and that expands the potential for wind energy to offer solutions for reliability and performance. To meet the needs of end users for lower-cost and highly efficient energy, the future of wind involves innovating and developing energy technology and products; creating intelligent system solutions that comprise distributed energy, intelligent microgrids, demand-side management, smart energy efficiency; and digital cloud platforms. These solutions will help owners reduce their overall energy costs, increase their use of clean energy, reshape energy values, and promote green development.

Reinhard Sander, Vice President of Engineering & Technology at Goldwind Americas, will discuss in this session how IoT and data drives wind farm ownership value through robust energy solutions including:

  • Artificial Intelligence, big data and real-world analytics.
  • Configuration of diverse energy resources (smart microgrids) to achieve smart energy dispatching
  • Locking in value long-term with layered technology platforms to optimize the machines themselves – making them smarter and more powerful than ever before
