Mitigating Risk From Natural Disasters Using IIoT Applications
  • Philip Mezey - Chief Executive Officer, Itron

Disasters have caused more than $1.4 trillion in damage and affective 1.7 billion people over the past 10 years, according to the United Nations Office for Disaster Risk Reduction. From storms to floods to fires, the devastation caused by these natural disasters have a serious impact on critical infrastructure. Thanks to advances in technology, communities are responding to natural disasters in ways they never have before. Industrial IoT (IIoT) applications are revolutionizing disaster prediction and response, thereby helping communities increase reliability and safety during disasters and gain insights that were previously unavailable—all while promoting the quality of life, safety and well-being of citizens. Attend this keynote to hear real-world examples of how advanced communities are using IIoT applications to help mitigate risk before these disasters make their landfall, during and after they have passed.

Presentation: Manage, Integrate, Analyze: Utilizing your captured IoT data
  • Speaker Desmond Tan - Senior Director of Product Engineering, Actian

With 5G starting to roll out, delivering 100 times the bandwidth of prior 4G networks – not to mention many successful pilots of IoT in Cloud environments, it would be very easy to think that data management in Edge IoT environments won’t need to evolve beyond simple memory, flat file, and SQLite data management. To the contrary, along with this increase in bandwidth at the edge, we will also see far more intelligent, locally networked applications and localized analytics that require persistent local and locally shared data. Join this session to learn how, where, and why localized data processing and analytics – including Machine Learning – would accelerate insights that improve device management and governance, IoT security, and business outcomes.

Case Study: Using IoT-Enabled Methane Sensing to Enhance Gas Energy Safety
  • Magdalena Michniuk - Senior Specialist, Con Edison

Demonstrating intelligence at the edge, Consolidated Edison (Con Edison) is installing first-of-a-kind smart natural gas detectors that can detect gas leaks early and notify emergency responders faster than customer calls usually do. Con Edison is the first utility in the country to pilot this incredibly important gas safety technology. The innovative IoT-based detectors, which were jointly developed by Itron and New Cosmos, connect to Con Edison’s existing smart network from Itron and can communicate directly with the utility’s Gas Emergency Response Center in the event of a leak.=

The detector will sound an alarm if it detects natural gas in the atmosphere. It will also send an alert to Con Edison, which will notify the local fire department. Con Edison and the fire department will respond and investigate. The alarm will continue to sound until Con Edison silences the unit. The alarm includes a voice recording advising building occupants to evacuate and to call 911.

During this session, Con Edison will discuss how it is using smart technology to improve gas safety and potentially save lives.

Developers Conference: Build & Deploy
Presentation: Build Complex Things, Simply

Why is making hardware so hard? First, the total time and cost to launch a differentiated product is prohibitively high because of expensive and iterative design, manufacturing and testing. Second, system form factors aren’t flexible -- connected things require richer features and/or smaller sizes. And finally, there’s unnecessary complexity in the manufacturing and component supply chain. Unlike software development, hardware design is slow, cumbersome, and not fun for designers. The result is continued proliferation of mass-produced, “one size fits all” solutions versus a wide range of cost effective solutions that support empowered individual choice.

The solution? The zGlue ZiPlet Store-- a unique platform where users can build complex things as simply as stacking blocks. The zGlue Integrated Platform (ZiP) simplifies designing and manufacturing devices for IoT systems by providing seamless integration of both hardware and software on a modular platform.

Using specific customer examples (ranging from BOE Technologies Group, a leading supplier of displays and intelligent interface products and services to several innovative start-ups), Zhang will explain how this new platform accelerates product development and helps customers to quickly develop differentiated prototypes, while also reducing time to market, cost, system form factor, and design complexity. The platform is suitable for both high-growth consumer and high-volume industrial markets.
