Presentation: Modernizing New York City’s Subway System with IoT-Enabled Automation and Outage Detection
  • Speaker Kevin Wasserman - Senior Specialist, Con Edison

The New York City Subway system is one of the largest and busiest in the world, with 472 passenger stations and an annual ridership of over 1.7 billion people. The system, opened in 1904, is mostly underground and suffers from unique and aging electrical infrastructure. In 2017, the Metropolitan Transit Authority (MTA) reported a total of 32,000 annual subway delays caused by power-related events.

Consolidated Edison (Con Edison) and the MTA embarked on a joint effort to develop and implement a solution to leverage the ongoing deployment of the Con Edison’s IoT-enabled Advanced Metering Infrastructure (AMI) system to detect and respond to outages before delays result.

Due to political pressure and regulatory requirements, the deployment of AMI infrastructure, as well as the development of a software platform and the creation of a communication protocol was performed at a substantially accelerated pace. Con Edison had to overcome communication coverage challenges at the underground facilities, as well as a lack of integrated outage management system and provide near real-time alarming to satisfy a regulatory requirement of responding to an outage within 30 minutes of its occurrence. Additionally, Con Edison and the MTA built upon existing inter-company communications to streamline language and improve clarity when notifying and responding to outages. The system was completed and implemented on schedule at the end of January 2018.

During this session, Con Edison will discuss the substantial benefits it has seen in accelerating outage response and addressing issues before impact occurs.
