Kyler Laird is Managing Member of his family's NW Indiana farm operation, Lairdscape LLC. Kyler was raised on the farm, growing corn and soybeans with his father and grandfather. After completing a Bachelor's in Computer Science at Purdue University, Kyler worked for the Purdue School of Engineering for ten years while completing his Master's in Agricultural Systems Management. Starting in 2001, he participated in founding the University of California Merced and continues working for its School of Engineering today. As his father's health declined, Kyler moved home and eventually took over operation of the family farm.
Starting in 2011, Kyler began to do all of the planting and harvesting of what grew to be 1700 acres of Lairdscape land using conventional modern ag. equipment. In 2016, Kyler modified his grandfather's tractor to drill 50 acres of soybeans on its own, and then automated a more modern tractor to operate a grain cart in the field with him during harvest. In 2017, he used a small unmanned tractor to plant all 535 acres of corn. That system went on to win the 2017 agBOT Challenge Seeding Competition.
Today Kyler continues to develop novel, efficient, and cost-effective solutions for row-crop agriculture, and assists his wife's pastured poultry and produce operation. He also serves on the board of his local Soil and Water Conservation District and the board of Robot Operating System Agriculture (ROS-A).
