Harsh Mittal Head of Engineering at Circles Asia


Harsh has been a software engineering and product leader across global blue-chip companies and startups. He has extensive experience in building complex scalable software platforms and applications with expertise in distributed systems, big data, payments and mobile applications.

In his last assignment Harsh worked with Reliance Jio, India’s telecom disrupter where his team built recharge, payments and coupons systems for 100s of millions of customers. He headed engineering teams at Jio Financial Innovation group at Bangalore. His team also developed NFC based payment for Jio phone, an ultra-low cost 4G enabled feature phone.

Prior to Jio, Harsh led development of big data platform at Flipkart, India’s largest e-commerce company. This platform helped Flipkart to transform many of its systems to be data driven including product recommendation, demand forecasting, seller ratings, accounting settlements and fraud detection. Flipkart data platform ingests Terabytes of data every day, runs thousands of batch & streaming jobs, overall handling multiple Petabytes of data. It is one of the biggest such platforms in the country.

Harsh also managed Flipkart's payment engineering group, handling all digital payments and refunds for Flipkart customers. His team scaled payment systems to handle massive scale of Big Billion Day sale and various flash sales reliably. This work required working very closely with all major banks in India and ensuring their systems can also handle this scale.

His team launched financing options for non-credit card holding customers in partnership with State Bank of India, first such offering in India. This team also introduced concept of interest free financing on Flipkart another first in Indian e-commerce.

Harsh spent major part of his career at Microsoft both in India and USA. He contributed to many products during his nine-year stint including Azure (cloud), Exchange (email) and Microsoft System center (Data center management). His major accomplishment was to build Azure app services platform, app hosting service hosting applications for millions of customers. As senior product manager he was responsible for building systems for dev ops and customer support team so that any customer issue can be diagnosed and resolved in timely manner.

Before Microsoft, Harsh worked as software developer for Motorola and Solidcore systems (a security startup).
