Martyn’s first experiences in information technology came from statistical analysis of scientific data using SPSS and a keypunch machine. By the mid-seventies, he was an enthusiastic supporter of the microcomputer revolution, evangelising the new technology and presenting a regular programme about computers on BBC local radio.
Ten years ago Martyn co-founded the Charities Security Forum which represents the interests of information security professionals working in the not-for-profit and charity sectors, and his contribution to information security in was featured in SC Magazine when he was ranked as the 7th 'Most Influential person in Information Security’ in their annual review of 2010. In 2014 Martyn was nominated for CSO of the Year and the work of his team was recognised with the "Highly Commended" Best Security Team at the SC Europe Awards.
Martyn took up the role of Chief Information Officer at The Salvation Army in the UK in 2009 to head up the Strategic Information Department at their UK Headquarters. He has been responsible for the information systems at the core of the Salvation Army’s operations, ensuring that the charity’s staff across the UK have been able to fully utilise information and communications technology in the realisation of the mission of The Salvation Army.
Martyn often presents at conferences and seminars where his focus is frequently on Information Security, especially in the third sector.
