Mr. Sam Verbelen (1976) obtained his masters degree in industrial sciences – electronics in
2001. In 2010 he obtained the certificate of the post academic training in
energy techniques in buildings at Ghent University.
After a first year in software-development he was employed in 2003 by the city of Antwerp as a
technical consultant and project leader for redevelopment and maintenance of the public space. In
2009 his interest in energy performance of buildings and sustainability gave him the opportunity to
take the function of energy consultant. As part of a team he was responsible for the energy
performance of the cities own building stock. The team had the clear goal to enhance the
performance of these buildings in a budget-neutral way.
Mid 2013 he joined the energy and environmental department of the city to strengthen the efforts for
new district heating infrastructure. As a first project he took on the mapping of the local heating and
cooling demand in close cooperation with the local DSO’s. These were delivered in the beginning of
2014 as a set of GIS compatible files. In the next years the heat sources were mapped (waste heat,
geothermal, biomass, etc.)
Until recent the further development of demand and supply mapping and the development of a
strategic energy vision was an important part of his activities next to conducting feasibility
studies for new district heating and cooling infrastructure. As part of the latter he maintains a strong
dialogue with the city’s urban planners.
From the first of October 2018 he joined the Circular South team as innovation manager Energy and Water. As the city of Antwerp is lead partner for the project, he is responsible for realising the shared energy-systems, smart metering and a data platform with mobile front-end. This app will serve as a dashboard to provide the consumers with insight in their energy and water consumption and waste production. The same platform will also engage users through nudging and a blockchain based rewarding system.
