Getting it Right: 3 Key Smart Home Engineering & Design Mistakes to Avoid

From the apartment dweller to the homeowner, we will all be living in smart environments by 2020. As more personalized IoT devices are integrated into the smart home, smart platforms at the edge will help make consumer adoption a reality. This demands interoperability. The more interoperable the technology, the better the customer experience.

Patrick Mendiuk digs into the technical nuances and major mistakes to avoid when designing and engineering intuitive, easy-to-use intelligent home management systems. Using case studies, Mendiuk will share how collaboration between device developers, designers and manufacturers will become more prevalent in 2018, and share why collaboration between industry partners on fully integrated solutions will accelerate adoption.

Emotional Barriers to Smart Home Adoption
  • Presenter Colin Bay - Chief Research Officer, Thug Design
more

We hear about smart homes everywhere in the news, but the installed base so far is very small. Why? Though the right kind of technology implementations can help, the answer is less about specifications and technology and more about how people feel. For regular people outside of the technology industry, there are significant emotional obstacles to putting their home in the hands of smart technologies—because that’s what it feels like to them. This talk will explore some of the these emotional barriers, including the following:

  • Perceived difficulty of smart home technology based on past experience with similar solutions
  • Sense of vulnerability because it seems everything is hackable (and sadly, they’re right)
  • Lack of control because they don’t fully understand what the technology is doing
  • Fear of missing fall-backs (e.g., can I get in my house if my phone is dead or the power is out?)
  • General resistance to new product adoption because companies overestimate product benefits and underestimate the difficulties

Fortunately, there are directions in both marketing and product design that can address these anxieties, and we will cover some powerful approaches to diminishing emotional obstacles to smart homes.
