Phil Chen treats entrepreneurial and venture investing endeavors as liberal art pursuits. As the Decentralized Chief Officer at HTC, Phil is launching the Exodus Phone on the thesis that the world needs a phone that will power the future of decentralized internet. Phil started out as a physicist, a research assistant at both Stanford Linear Accelerator Center and Center for Astrophysics and Space Sciences at UCSD. In 2005, Phil began his entrepreneurial career at an e-book start-up which culminated in the Alex Reader, that eventually became the Barnes & Noble Nook. Two years later, Phil joined HTC as product manager for Android phones and tablets. This included building the first android phones on earth and launching the Facebook phone, the only phone co-branded with a social media internet company that also became the QQ/Tencent and Weibo phone in China. Phil later headed business and corporate development at HTC, which included investments in Soundhound, Beats, and Wolfram Alpha. Phil also was on the founding team of the Vive. Witnessing the advent of VR, Phil and two partners started Presence Capital, which, according to Pitchbook, is the first and most active VR/AR investment firm in the world. In 2015, Phil also joined Horizons Ventures as Advisor where he served as board director/observer for fifteen companies around the world including Improbable, Sentient, Fano labs, 88 Rising, Amper, Soul machines, Blue Vision Labs, Scopely, Smash gg, Baobab, Nomadic, Eyeway and Kneron. He has a BA in Pure Mathematics and BS in Physics from UCSD and a Master of Divinity in Postmodern Philosophy from Fuller Theological Seminary. Phil is proud father of Miles, Naomi and Olive and husband of Tanya Lee.
