Tonio Buonassisi
Professor at Massachusetts Institute of Technology


Professor Tonio Buonassisi is a Principal Investigator at the Low Energy Electronic Systems (LEES) Interdisciplinary Research Group (IRG) under the Singapore-MIT Alliance for Research and Technology (SMART), research enterprise of Massachusetts Institute of Technology in Singapore.

He is also a Professor of Mechanical Engineering at MIT, granted tenure for his outstanding contributions to solar energy research. He founded the Accelerated Materials Development Programme at Singapore Agency for Science, Technology and Research (A*STAR) with National University of Singapore and Singapore’s Nanyang Technology University and founded the MIT Photovoltaics Research Laboratory.

His work and research, benefitting both companies and the public, have earned him a US Presidential Early Career Award for Scientists & Engineers (PECASE) in 2016 from President Obama, a National Science Foundation CAREER Award, a Google Faculty Award, the prestigious Everett Moore Baker Award — the only MIT teaching award selected by undergraduates.

His work has greatly impacted the field of science and his innovations have translated to improvements in our everyday lives, such as record-efficiency devices in industrial solar cells.

A leading researcher and authoritative voice in AI, his recent interests and works include pioneering the application of machine learning to develop new materials for societally beneficial applications; developing materials for more sustainable plastics, cheaper computer chips, sustainable materials for air conditioning, and lighter metals for planes.
