Alexander WillnerHead of the Industrial Internet of Things Centre at Fraunhofer FOKUS
Dr. Alexander Willner is head of the Industrial Internet of Things (IIoT) Center within the business unit for Software-based Networks (NGNI) at the Fraunhofer Institute for Open Communication Systems (FOKUS) and head of the IIoT research group within the chair for Next Generation Networks (AV) at the Technical University Berlin (TUB). In joint collaboration with the Berlin Center of Digital Transformation (BCDT) he is working with his groups on moving towards the realization of software-based industrial communication infrastructures. The most important research areas include real-time networks (e.g. TSN/5G/6G), middleware systems (e.g. OPC UA), distributed AI (e.g. via Digital Twins) and distributed Cloud Computing (e.g. Edge Computing) including management and orchestration.
Prior research positions include the University of Bonn, Dr. Willner holds an M.Sc. and a Dr.-Ing. in computer science from the University Göttingen and the Technical University Berlin respectively. His research interests are on distributed information systems, real-tim systems, linked data, communication middleware, mobile networks, and service-oriented architectures. He is active in relevant standardization activities and alliances and gives a corresponding lecture at the Technical University Berlin; and in the past at the Humboldt University of Berlin as well. At various occasions Dr. Willner also acts as ambassador for the science capital Berlin.
