Telcos have launched just 19 standalone 5G networks to date and that slow pace of development is understandably having an impact on mobile core spending, according to a new analyst report by Dell’Oro Group.

After 17 years and many billions of pounds, Vodafone UK is preparing to call time on its 3G network.

The operator announced on Tuesday that it will begin phasing out the service in 2023 as part of an upgrade intended to improve the performance of its 4G and 5G networks.

Dish Network is required by the US government to cover 20% of the US population with 5G by June 14, 2022. And, according to a number of indications, the company is well on its way toward meeting that goal.

Open RAN, according to research firm Dell'Oro, is gaining a fair bit of traction. So much so that it has taken Dell'Oro analyst Stefan Pongratz a little by surprise.

"We did not expect open RAN to already comprise a low-single digit share of the overall RAN market," he told Light Reading.
