Dr. Daniel Tapias is Founder and CEO of Sigma.AI. Sigma was founded in 2008 and is headquartered in San Francisco, with a large operations center located in Madrid. With extensive experience in research, design, and product implementation, Dr. Tapias has focused the last twelve years on forging a company to introduce customers to state-of-the-art artificial intelligence advances, concentrating on their practical implementation, deployment, and monetization. Dr. Tapias has co-founded a number of other companies in the field, and was also an Associate Professor of Telecommunication Engineering at the Autonomous University of Madrid. He received his PhD in Telecommunication from the Polytechnic University of Madrid.

Prior to creating Sigma, Dr. Tapias was an innovation strategy authority at Telefónica where he created and managed the user-experience department at Telefónica Movistar. He was integral in the creation and commercial launch of Telefonica mobile services. Dr. Tapias also designed Telefonica’s data quality assessment methodology as well as its data collection and annotation platform, which reduced data annotation time by 80%


Dr. Tapias is an expert in speech and language artificial intelligence technologies and has performed over 15 years of research work in the field. While at the Research and Development Center of Telefonica he led the Speech Recognition, Natural Language Technologies, and Biometrics team. He has worked on a number of multidisciplinary projects at AT&T Bell Labs in Murray Hill (NJ, USA) and was a visiting scientist at Carnegie Mellon University in Pittsburg (PA, USA). He is the co-author of a number of books, has published over 50 papers, and has taught over 30 courses in speech and language technologies.
