Martin Koehring is the head of The Economist Group’s World Ocean Initiative. The Initiative imagines an ocean in robust health, and with a vital economy. Year-round and at its flagship World Ocean Summit, WOI fosters a global conversation on the greatest challenges facing the seas, inspiring bold thinking, new partnerships and the most effective action to build a sustainable ocean economy. The Initiative's focus areas include blue finance, innovation and governance. Recent projects include a study on A sustainable ocean economy in 2030, the Women and the ocean: Changemakers challenge and The Protectors Ocean series.
Previously Martin was managing editor and global health lead at The Economist Intelligence Unit's thought leadership division. He has led major research projects in sustainability and global health, for example, on food sustainability, sustainable infrastructure and global access to healthcare. Before that he was Europe editor in the EIU's country analysis department.
Martin earned a bachelor of economic and social studies in international relations (first class honours) from Aberystwyth University and a master’s degree in EU international relations and diplomacy studies from the College of Europe.
