Profile
Tom Whicher is CEO of DrDoctor and an NHS Innovation Fellow, where he works with the National Innovation Accelerator (NIA) to advance the adoption of evidence-based healthcare innovation.
Passionate about using technology to create sustainable healthcare systems, Tom delivered one of the first patient portals in the NHS in 2012 and has worked to put technology in the hands of patients ever since. Tom has worked with NHS Wales on their National Value Based Care programme and delivered complex technology driven change in large NHS Acute teaching hospitals. Combining his change management experience with agile methods and a robust understanding of the underlying tech infrastructure, Tom works closely with central bodies, including the Department of Health and Social Care, on developing policy and best practice for technology in healthcare.
Tom has also worked internationally with the Department for International Trade as part of US/NHS trade mission in 2016, Middle East Trade Mission in 2019, and the UK Israel Dangoor Health Initiative. He’s written on health tech for The Guardian, and been featured in The Independent, Sky News, LBC, CNBC, and across the health trade press.
Driven by people and personal development, Tom mentors on the Bethnal Green Ventures programme, the Digital Health.London Accelerator, and regularly speaks at NHS Confederation, Innovation Expo, Digital Health Rewired and others events.
Tom is a qualified Naval Architect and has an engineering degree from Southampton University where he wrote a genetic algorithm in FOTRAN which is still part of the syllabus today. He’s sailed competitively at the international level, including winning the National Match racing nationals, is an accomplished offshore racer.
