Women in Comms Breakfast Workshop: 5G – a Bigger, Better Network – but Will It Be a Boon or Barrier to Women in Comms?

5G promises not only faster speeds, but lower latency and the networking foundation for significant progress in emerging technologies like AI, automated vehicles, IoT, smart cities and more. The tech and communications industries expect 5G to deliver new opportunities for service providers and equipment manufacturers, but how will 5G impact the engineers and network architects at these organizations? What impact will 5G have on hiring decisions, future employment opportunities and for women in comms to break or bump into the glass ceiling? This panel will address the many potential benefits and opportunities 5G brings to the network, new technologies, organizations and employees – but also takes an honest look at potential barriers 5G could present to women in comms, and how to prepare for those challenges.

Service Provider Keynote: Network Slicing - The Next Steps

Network slicing is the lynchpin of the promise of 5G. Innovations in the RAN and SDN, massively distributed cloud infra-structure running from public cloud to telco-core to telco-edge to UE, and harmonization between RAN and EPC are the additional enablers that are evolving concomitantly. Consequently, there is a surge in the complexity and an acute need to make automation indispensable to orchestration. Yet, telco-grade operationalization of network slicing hinges on a few missing pieces; and this presentation will double-click on the same.

Lightning Talks - Transformation to Automated Networking - Where are We on the Journey?

Communications service providers have been on long journey in network automation from human-operated switchboards to software-based networking. But automation is a never-ending journey. Humans are still integral to the management and operation of networks and they are struggling to cope as network traffic increases and technologies become more complex. This series of lightning talks will explore the adoption of NETCONF/YANG to automate device configuration, advances in software defined networking (SDN), the use of telemetry to automate network monitoring, intent/policy and service assurance to implement closed-loop automation and artificial intelligence to enable adaptive and predictive automation.

Taming Edge Networks with Open Networking & SDN
  • Alessandro Barbieri - Vice President, Product Management, Pluribus Networks

There is a set of emerging applications with new latency, bandwidth thinning, autonomy and privacy requirements that are driving the deployment of compute and storage to multiple edges and into a distributed cloud, closer to people and things. As the pendulum swings from centralized to this distributed cloud, the networking of the compute and storage resources becomes more challenging. Many sites will be lights out facilities with no co-located network operations skill sets so the traditional box-by-box networking is no longer tenable. This means the network needs to become highly SDN automated and virtualized while simultaneously reducing cost, space and power consumption for these more compact facilities. This talk will address an approach using open networking, SDN and network virtualization to create a next generation network fabric for distributed cloud.

Network operators don't want SDN and white box hardware everywhere in their networks, but Heavy Reading research shows that an area of keen interest for both is in edge networks, particularly at the IP layer. With leading edge network operators – including AT&T – sending a clear message to their suppliers that access and edge routing should be disaggregated, a new crop of startups is emerging to address the requirements. Incumbent vendors, meanwhile, must address their messaging and their product lines for this trend. 5G is a major driver for white box routers, but not the only one. This session will address the primary drivers for disaggregated routers at the edge as well as the pros and cons of this approach compared to traditional coupling of proprietary hardware and software.

Breakout Panel: Automation & Orchestration for NFV - What is Holding up Adoption?
  • Moderator Jennifer Clark - Principal Analyst, Cloud Infrastructure and Edge Computing, Heavy Reading
  • Panelist Jason Gadsby - Assistant Vice President, Product Management - Edge Solutions, AT&T Business
  • Panelist Amy LaFebre - Director of Technology, Global Network Management, Verizon
  • Panelist Vineet Anshuman - SME- Next-generation Networks Practice, TCTS
  • Panelist Dilip Pillaipakam - VP, Service Provider Business, Infoblox
  • Panelist Dom Chorafakis - Senior Architect, AQSACOM

A recent Heavy Reading survey found that less than a quarter of respondents' virtualized networks currently use orchestration to automate services; the rest depend on manual operations. Clearly this is not sustainable; without orchestration CSPs will not experience the levels of automation they want and will not be ready with their telco cloud offerings for the 5G market. One factor that is causing the delay in adoption is the difficulty of orchestrating across SDN, NFV and OSS domains. Another issue is confusion about the open source initiatives ONAP and OSM. Should operators build their orchestration platforms around one or both of these, or should they stick to commercial offerings that are ready to deploy today? This panel will debate the challenges to orchestration for NFV and the potential solutions.
