Keynote Panel: Are We There Yet? The State of NFV/SDN Deployment

There is substantial activity on many fronts, both in deploying services and virtual network functions, and in creating the infrastructure and network operations systems that will sustain virtualization going forward. This panel will assess the market's current state and specifically point to its successes and the persisting challenges.

Keynote Panel: The State of Co-opetition

The telecom industry has come together along both traditional and non-traditional lines to identify and move forward on common challenges. This panel will take a closer look at where efforts to cooperate are working and the role that both open source groups and traditional SDOs are playing in the success. It will also frankly discuss the future of cooperative efforts among what are ultimately competing companies, the potential tension between telecom and webscale companies and the way market trends such as consolidation are impacting everyone.

Breakout Panel: Who’s Driving Interoperability?

Even though both SDN and NFV have entered the mass-commercial deployment phase, important questions surrounding interoperability still exist. While many activities are ongoing, a degree of fragmentation and overlap still exists which only serves to complicate interoperability and foil the dream of a pure software plug and play world.  Accordingly, this panel will consider the state of interoperability and potential for major open-source and carrier reference architectures to take center stage and create a foundational common architectural template that will assure interoperability.

Breakout Panel: SD-WAN Evolution Strategies: From Appliance-based to Integrated NFV

The earliest operator SD-WAN managed services simply took ownership of enterprise SD-WAN appliances and managed the network on the customers’ behalf without significant value-add beyond convenience. But smart operators have realized that there is a much more strategic approach to managed SD-WANs and have started rolling out SD-WAN services that add the value of integration. By combining multiple virtualized network functions (VNFs) and services together, operators are able to add real value to SD-WANs that enterprise customers cannot match on their own. This panel session explores how SD-WAN can serve as the gateway to multiple VNFs and as the anchor to operators’ NFV strategies for the branch.

Breakout Panel: Accelerating OpenStack for Telcos

Most telcos expect to ultimately deliver NFV using cloud infrastructure. Heavy Reading research consistently shows that OpenStack is telcos’ preferred cloud management system. Just as consistently, though, we hear that OpenStack needs major extensions and enhancements in order to make it suitable for telcos. So what’s the real story? Is it ready or not? This session will explore the current state of OpenStack deployment in the telco environment, and what more—if anything—needs to be done to accelerate and facilitate greater adoption.

Breakout Panel: Getting to “Cloud-Native"

One of the major challenges in the move to NFV is that most network functions have a monolithic architecture that is not suited to a cloud environment. Network function owners are therefore challenged to re-architect them by breaking them into micro services and using technologies like containers so they can be managed by cloud orchestration tools. This session will explore the current state of network functions and what strategies vendors are taking to make their VNFs cloud-native.
