Sustainability at Open RAN World

We are committed to Open RAN World 2023 having a positive impact on people and planet. We want to play a key role in helping the telecommunications industry improve its own sustainability by connecting people with the networks and knowledge they need to help solve the big challenges of the future.

Our commitment


As part of our commitment, we are focusing on: 

Inspiring Sustainability

Embed sustainability into our brand by 2025 to inspire our sector to be more sustainable, promoting the achievement of the UN’s Sustainable Development Goals:

  • Promoting Open RAN approach at the event and across our digital channels including website and social media.

Reducing energy consumption in mobile networks is one of the most significant challenges facing the telecom industry this decade. With 70 to 85% of the energy consumption in a mobile network coming from the RAN, Open RAN can contribute to this effort immensely.

  • Carefully curated agenda featuring presentations on Energy Efficiency in Open RAN from Prof. Hanna Bogucka, Head of Cooperation and Board Member at Rimedo Labs.
  • Celebrating the Best Automation Solution and Best Performance Solution as well as Best Cloud Solution in Open RAN at the Open RAN World Awards on 26 April.

Environmentally Responsible

Become carbon neutral, halve our waste and save customers more carbon than we emit by 2025 as a stepping stone to being zero waste and net zero carbon by 2030 or earlier by:

  • Energy or material efficiency.
  • Sustainable procurement choices.
  • Environmental credentials of hotels or catering.
  • Option to offset travel during registration. 
  • Venue sustainability features (e.g. Water bottle refill stations).
  • Better stands.

Socially Responsible

Contribute value of at least 1% of profit before tax to community groups by 2025, champion diversity and inclusion and create value for our host cities by:

  • Start-up challenges or university competitions.
  • Scholarships or accessibility programmes. 
  • Support of local communities.
  • Onsite attendee wellbeing initiatives (sport activities, healthy café, focus zones).
  • Wellbeing and health tips whilst attending the show.

Help improve the sustainability of Open RAN World 2023

As an attendee

  1. Consider how you'll get to the event and if you can avoid air travel or take lower carbon transport
  2. Bring a refillable bottle to save plastic 
  3. Recycle your waste onsite and in your hotel where possible
  4. Consider opting for vegetarian and vegan food options and avoid food waste
  5. Only take the give-aways or brochures you need and will use, consider if there are digital alternatives
  6. Consider the environmental credentials of the hotel when deciding where to stay

As an exhibitor

  1. Ensure your stand can be reused by either yourself or by your contractors
  2. Optimise your travel by consolidating your shipments and choosing logistic companies with strong sustainability credentials
  3. Think carefully about handouts, reduce them by going digital and source recycled, sustainably certified
