Standards and Release Roadmap Toward 5G: A North American Perspective

ATIS is assessing 5G requirements for the North American market, focusing on the evolution from LTE to 5G, regulatory requirements, security by design for 5G, and drivers for initial 5G deployments. 5G will provide dramatic performance enhancements, but in many cases incremental improvements to LTE will satisfy the initial requirements for 5G use cases. As a result, it is important to define practical scenarios for the evolution from LTE to 5G, service migration strategies, and the phasing of 5G deployment. Initial applications could include fixed/mobile convergence and mmwave high speed access complementing dense metro fiber networks.

This presentation provides an overview of the ATIS analysis, conclusions and next steps.
