Jamii, is a mobile micro-health insurance product for the low income and informal sector, launched in January 2015. The service is provided through a mobile policy management platform which performs all the administration activities of an insurer and allows users to access cheap insurance via USSD. Jamii has formed strategic partnerships with Jubilee Insurance and Vodacom Tanzania, which enables mobile premium collection and a cashless facility from over 400 hospitals. The company has also replaced insurance identification cards with a digital ID number for verification. Jamii has almost 8,000 Tanzanians using the platform since it launched, and the team has grown to include 98 agents and nine managers. Jamii has now closed its seed round of $360k, receiving funding from Techstars and angel investors. The startup had already obtained grant money from the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, and will launch in five other African countries in 2017; Kenya, Uganda, Ghana, Nigeria and South Africa.
