Keynote: Accelerating the Pace of Innovation for the Telco Industry & the Importance of Collaboration
  • Axel Clauberg - Vice President, Infrastructure Cloud & IP End to End, Deutsche Telekom AG, Group Headquarters

The exponential Internet traffic growth is still one of the main challenges for the Telco industry. In the past, Moore’s Law has helped us to keep our production cost for the exponentially growing traffic under control. With Moore’s Law flattening out, we see a strong trend in the industry towards the disaggregation of hardware and software.

From monolithic black-box solutions, we are moving towards a modular, best-in-class, flexible and open ecosystem, including an automated lifecycle management in true DevOps style.

None of the Telcos can do this on their own – the success of this industry depends on collaboration.
The Linux Foundation Networking Fund, focused on Open Source Software, as well as the Telecom Infra Project (TIP) are good practice examples serving collaboration in the industry. What can we take away from it?

Keynote: The 5 Pillars of Network Integrity
  • Ronan Kelly - CTO, EMEA & APAC Regions, ADTRAN

The broadband industry is facing into a new era.

Tasked with delivering on the needs of Gigabit societies, while fending off margin erosion from OTT competition, many operators are looking to the lessons learned by their web-scale competitors. Operators seeking to architect smarter, more intelligent and responsive access networks, have recognized they need to change. Seeking to break ties with their traditional, closed, element management based past, these operators plan to leverage virtualization, disaggregation, open SDN control along with open management and orchestration. With much of the potential in open SD-Access networks stemming from a mix of Open source contributions and the emergence of white box hardware offerings, how can operators best maintain their confidence in the integrity of their networks?

Find the right wireless for your fixed business
  • Speaker Willem Verbiest - Head of Network Solutions, Nokia
  • Speaker Rupert Wood - Research Director, Analyses Mason

The Fixed Wireless Access (FWA) landscape is rapidly evolving with more and more options to choose from. We know that 4G networks are capable of delivering competitive residential broadband services and that 5G can ultimately bring Gigabit speeds to homes over the airwaves. There are also unlicensed solutions such as WiGig to consider. The fact is that each of these technologies has its advantages and will be attractive to different operators based on their needs. Come to this session to hear what industry experts have to say about where each of these technologies fit so that you can find the right wireless for your fixed business.

SDN: the Lessons Learned in the Last 10 Years
  • Xipeng Xiao - CTO Office, Western Europe, Huawei

− SDN was invented by Martin Casado for enterprise management (i.e. for management plane), but for many years, it was mis-used for control plane;

− SDN should be self-driving network instead of software defined network.  Automation is the purpose. Software defined or not is just a mechanism, and is not important;

− Huawei IDN is a practical way for network and operations automation.

Accelerating the deployment of SDN-enabled broadband access (SEBA) systems
  • Robert Conger - CTO, Americas and Head of Portfolio Strategy, Adtran

The Open Networking Foundation (ONF) has created new Reference Design (RD) blueprints to assemble common modular components to create open source platforms that will enable specific deployment use cases for the emerging edge cloud. Each RD is backed by an operator group that intends to roll out production deployments. In the ONF’s 2018 Strategic Plan, operators outlined a course of action to accelerate deployment of open networking. While many of the components of these reference designs, like Software Enabled Broadband Access (SEBA), consist of white-box hardware and open-source software, there are also single sourced software assets that are required to make these reference designs deployment ready today. We are now at a critical stage where operators are ready to take these projects out of the lab environment and move them into production networks. As an early investor in software defined access (SD-Access) architectures and CORD-based systems, as well as an ONF supply chain partner, ADTRAN will share the current deployment readiness and operational challenges of deploying commercial networks based on SEBA R-CORD.

Panel: Why are software-defined access networks important for telcos?
  • Moderator David Eckard - Fixed Networks CTO, Nokia
  • Panelist Benoit Felten - CEO, Diffraction Analyses
  • Panelist Bruno Cornaglia - Fixed Access Manager, Vodafone

Communication Service Providers have heavily invested in their fixed access network and continue to do so. Throughout the network lifecycle many changes happen that influence the quality and performance of the network. How do you know if your network is still delivering according to initially set goals? Running efficient networks typically means increasing both operational performance for customers and financial performance for shareholders. But how to go about this? Where do you start?

This session introduces a universal network metric for defining the health of the fixed access network and the need for network optimization programs that streamline network operations, reducing costs and increase customer satisfaction.

PANEL hosted by Radisys: Open Frameworks: The Future of Next-gen Networks or Just an Interesting Science Project?
  • Moderator Natasha Tamaskar - Vice President Global Marketing & Sales Strategy, Radisys
  • Manuel Paul - Senior Expert International Standardization, Deutsche Telekom
  • Saurav Das - Engineering Director, ONF
  • Rishi Raj Maulick - Product Line Manager - MobilityEngine., Radisys
  • Dhiraj Sharma - Senior Vice President, Reliance Jio

As service providers seek to transform their networks to keep pace with bandwidth demands, open frameworks have come to the forefront of options for network disruption. Leveraging open components can help break vendor lock-in, accelerate innovation, and reduce costs.

Open source projects are also attractive because they can be formed very quickly. All that is needed is an idea, and then for a few companies to come together to begin trying that idea out. However, this has also led to a plethora or open organizations and frameworks either overlapping in scope or leaving significant gaps in implementation.

Service providers are currently trialing open frameworks such as CORD today in the lab. But will these open source, multi-vendor solutions make it to commercial deployment or will traditional monolithic vendors prevail?

This panel session will feature a combination of service providers and vendors with their own viewpoint on the role of open source frameworks in driving network disruption – and if open frameworks will “win” out. Attendees will:

  • Understand the different open frameworks currently in the market (CORD, SEBA, Open Broadband, Open Daylight, TIP, ONAP, etc.) – and discover how they relate and how they differ
  • Learn about the challenges associated with deploying open source solutions
  • Gain insight into which service providers are taking the open source plunge, which frameworks they’re using, and the key outcomes achieved in lab trials to date
  • Decide if open frameworks are the future of next generation networks

Empowering Operators to take the lead in the Connected Home Market
  • Speaker Jonny Wetterborn - CEO, Seliro
  • Speaker Mats Vindefjard - Director of Business Development, Seliro

Seliro, experts in software and management solutions for the broadband industry, shares their beliefs around how Operators can, and should, play a critical role for the future Connected Home market. Currently, the retail market plays a big role in the evolving Connected Home market, including IoT and Wi-Fi Mesh solutions. Still, there is a long way to go before these solutions become standard parts of every person’s home. In part, this is due to lack of strong unifying players, with a sense of responsibility and care for the end-customer. Seliro is convinced that Telecom Operators, leveraging clever software solutions, possess fantastic potential to step up and take the lead in this area. In doing so, they will not only help end-users’ transition into this new era but will in the process advance their own strategic and commercial position.
