What are Private Networks and how is it affecting the industry?

A private 5G network is a local area network (LAN) that will use 5G technologies to create a dedicated network with unified connectivity, optimised services and a secure means of communication within a specific area. It will deliver the speed, latency and other benefits promised by 5G to support next-generation applications.

Following the advancement in IoT and the related explosion in data and analytics generated from M2M communications, enterprises now have a far greater need for high reliability, security and fast speeds on their network to power these new technologies. With 5G networks now live all over the world, the potential for URLLC private networks building on the capabilities of LTE networks with 5G.

In the past, the potential for private networks was limited due to the fact spectrum was largely limited to licensed spectrum for operators and unlicensed spectrum in the form of wifi. However, with support from European governments making spectrum available for local 5G services, paving the way for industrial giants and businesses to build private networks.

Why attend Private Networks in a 5G World?

Excitement about the disruptive capabilities of 5G, spectrum democratization and new network economics has triggered rising interest in building private infrastructure. Discussion has grown far beyond public safety. New classes of B2B service provider are emerging and new battlegrounds – like the building. There is also debate over which technologies are fit for purpose. Private LTE or CBRS are not the only choices for different use cases – Wi-Fi 6, Li-Fi and others may apply. Informed guidance is in urgent need.
