Profile

David Patterson is a computer science professor emeritus at UC Berkeley, a distinguished engineer in Google Brain, and Vice-Chair of the RISC-V Foundation Board of Directors. He received his BA, MS, and PhD degrees from UCLA. His most successful research projects were likely Reduced Instruction Set Computer (RISC), Redundant Array of Inexpensive Disks (RAID), and Network of Workstation (NOW). All three projects helped lead to multibillion-dollar industries. This work led to 40 awards for research, teaching, and service plus hundreds of papers and seven books. The best known book is Computer Architecture: A Quantitative Approach 6/e and the newest is The RISC-V Reader: An Open Architecture Atlas. In 2018 he and his co-author John Hennessy shared the ACM A.M Turing Award.
